The area known as Wembley Park originated in 1793, when the Page
family commissioned the landscape architect Humphry Repton, who
had recently laid out Brondesbury Park, to landscape the grounds
of his country mansion. After 1887 this 'park' was acquired by
the Metropolitan Railway and developed into a recreation
centre. Wembley Park became famous throughout the country after
1894, when along with the railway station a stadium was built
on the grounds and the Football Cup Final held there in 1923.
Its fame spread worldwide when it was selected by the Government
to house the British Empire Exhibition of 1924-25. With
further development, the 'park' gave way to an industrial
estate, conference and exhibition centres housing the Wembley
Arena, hotels and the famous Wembley Sunday Market.
The area of north west London that is served by the Metropolitan
and Jubilee lines tube station named Wembley Park is an area
under constant regeneration. The Twin Towers of that famous
stadium are now being replaced by a state-of-the-art 21st
century football stadium and new shopping and residential
precints. The station itself has undergone extensive
modernisation and expansion to prepare it for the increased
traffic. Even a world scale casino has been mooted. The rundown
concrete tower blocks of the 'infamous' Chalkhill housing estate
have been replaced by more salubrious smaller brick and tiled
houses comprising modern maisonettes.
To the north of Wembley Park station are the substantial
detached houses of the Barn Hill estate and Greenhill
and the Paddocks. To the east is the new Chalkhill and to the
south the industrial/commercial zones of the original 'park', also
comprising the stadium, and the housing along Wembley
Park Drive.
Wembley Park is well-supplied with shopping facilities, the most
notable being the Asda Superstore entered from Forty Lane. There
is a parade of shops on Bridge Street including groceries, banks,
cafes, restaurants bars. Further down off Olympic Way there
is a McDonald, Lidl, Curreys Electricals and JD Sports. Off
Fulton Way there is an MFI furniture superstore, Comet Electricals,
Allied Carpets, Carpetright and Harveys furniture.
